The term "high-risk pregnancy" can feel alarming when you first hear it — but it is important to understand that it does not mean something will go wrong. It simply means that you or your baby may need closer monitoring and more specialised care during your pregnancy. At Ganesh Test Tube Baby Centre, we have extensive experience managing high-risk pregnancies with warmth, expertise, and attentiveness at every stage.
What Makes a Pregnancy High-Risk?
Maternal Age
Women over the age of 35 are considered to have a higher-risk pregnancy due to increased chances of chromosomal conditions in the baby (such as Down syndrome) and a slightly higher risk of pregnancy complications. This does not mean problems are inevitable — it means we monitor more carefully.
Pregnancy After IVF or ART
IVF pregnancies, particularly those involving multiple embryo transfers, carry a modestly higher risk of complications including preterm birth, gestational hypertension, and placenta previa. Again, careful monitoring and early intervention keeps most IVF pregnancies on track.
Multiple Pregnancies (Twins or Triplets)
Multiple pregnancies carry higher risks of preterm labour, low birth weight, and pregnancy complications. We monitor these pregnancies frequently and work closely with our obstetric team.
Pre-existing Medical Conditions
- Diabetes (type 1, type 2, or gestational)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Thyroid disorders
- Autoimmune conditions (lupus, antiphospholipid syndrome)
- Heart or kidney conditions
- History of recurrent miscarriage
Previous Pregnancy Complications
Women who have experienced preeclampsia, preterm birth, placental abruption, or stillbirth in a previous pregnancy receive additional monitoring in subsequent pregnancies.
How We Support You Through a High-Risk Pregnancy
More Frequent Antenatal Visits
You will see us more often than in a standard pregnancy — typically every 2 weeks rather than monthly in the early stages, and weekly as you progress. These visits include blood pressure checks, urine testing, and detailed ultrasound assessments.
Advanced Ultrasound Monitoring
We use detailed growth scans, Doppler studies (to assess blood flow through the placenta and umbilical cord), and cervical length measurements where relevant, giving us early warning of any concerns.
Specialist Collaboration
We work closely with maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, and other consultants as needed, ensuring your care is genuinely comprehensive.
Personalised Medication Management
Some high-risk pregnancies benefit from medications such as low-dose aspirin (to reduce preeclampsia risk), progesterone supplements, blood thinners (for clotting disorders), or thyroid medication. We manage these carefully throughout your pregnancy.
Our promise to you: Being told your pregnancy is high-risk can feel frightening. But knowledge and monitoring are powerful. The vast majority of women with high-risk pregnancies go on to deliver healthy babies. We are with you every step of the way.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Please contact us immediately if you experience any of the following during pregnancy: severe headache or visual changes, sudden swelling of the face or hands, reduced fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of preterm labour (regular contractions before 37 weeks).

Whether you are planning your pregnancy or already expecting, our team provides compassionate, expert care tailored to your needs.
